Main ingredients:
- Rolled Oats: For best results, we recommend using rolled oats to make oat milk. Instant oats are more processed and run the risk of making mushy oat milk we also use rolled oats Everyday Oatmeal Recipe and: Easy Oatmeal Cookies! If you’re sensitive to gluten, look for certified gluten-free oats before making your oat milk.
- Cold Water. Ice water is the secret to the best homemade oat milk. If you’ve had problems with mushy oat milk, use cold water when mixing the oats. Cold water controls the oat starch, preventing that mushy texture.
- Optional. Feel free to flavor your homemade milk with vanilla extract, sea salt, cocoa powder, or sweeteners like maple syrup or honey. You can even make strawberry oat milk and mix in some strawberries (frozen is best).
How to make oat milk?
Making your own oat milk is incredibly easy and you’ll be hooked. I used to run out of milk all the time. Now, homemade oat milk is my go-to solution. It’s so simple and convenient. I make this all the time.

To make oat milk at home, put 1 cup of rolled oats and 4 cups of very cold water in your blender. You can add a little vanilla, maple syrup or a pinch of salt to taste.
Blend the mixture for 30-45 seconds until it’s nice and smooth. Then take a nut milk bag, a clean cotton towel, or even a few layers of cloth to squeeze the milk out. It also helps prevent the gummy or slimy texture that homemade oat milk can sometimes have.

For the absolute best results, I recommend straining the oat milk a second time. This extra step ensures a creamy (not runny) consistency that’s perfect for coffee, smoothies, or baking.

Easy Homemade Oat Milk
Oat milk is a creamy, delicious, plant-based milk that only takes a few ingredients and about five minutes to make. Use oat milk as a dairy replacement in batter, add to smoothies, coffee, or pour over your favorite cereal.
Makes 3 cups
You will need it
1 cup (113 g) rolled oats
4 cups (946 mL) cold water
1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, as desired
1/2 to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional for vanilla milk
A pinch of fine sea salt, if desired
Directions:
1:Add the oats, cold water and any additional ingredients to the blender. Cover and blend for 30-40 seconds. It’s okay if you see small specks of oats.
2:Strain oat milk. This is best done with a nut milk bag, a clean cotton dishtowel, or a cheesecloth placed over a large bowl or pitcher.(I like to strain the mixture twice to remove most of the solids).
3:Store homemade oat milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Shake or stir before use.
Advice from Adam and Joan
- Oats cut from steel. These won’t make the milk as creamy as rolled oats, but they will work. For best results, we don’t recommend using instant oats, as they are already processed, which adds more starch to the milk (risking a mushy texture).
- Prevention of homemade oatmeal slimy milk. Oat starch can contribute to the mushy texture of homemade oat milk.To prevent this, use very cold, ice water, don’t soak your oats, don’t stir the oats, and strain the oat milk to remove excess starch.
- Prepare strawberry oat milk. Add frozen berries for a berry-flavored milk.Fresh is fine, but cold berries help cut down on the starch.
- Chocolate oat milk. Add a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder and sweeten to taste with maple syrup or honey.
- Why did my oat milk stand out? Some separation is perfectly normal.Stir or shake the milk before use.
- Does homemade oat milk foam up? Unfortunately, no. Store-bought oat milk that foams has a few other ingredients (like stabilizers) that help it foam up and heat up without getting mushy.
